The Ozarks

I'm as far as I can get on my newest quilt (I've ran out of fabric and waiting for my mom to bring me some more) so I thought it was time to catch up on the blogging.  I seem to be getting behind ....

Todd and my friend Becky Courtright have the same birthday, so we decided that we would celebrate together.   Originally we thought just having a combined house party would be fun, but then Todd had a great idea of maybe going camping or something like that.   I passed the thought onto Becky and she thought it was great as well.   Becky got to researching and found this cool AWESOME cabin that was settled in the Ozarks of Arkansas.  For those of you who don't know anything about the Ozarks, they are located within 4 different states, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and even Kansas.   After living in Cheyenne and spending alot of time in the Rockies, I have become slightly jaded to what I consider mountains and just in general have a higher expectation.   After doing a little research I found out that in all honesty the Ozarks region is a high and deeply dissected plateau (thank you wikipedia).  That's good news for the Ozarks, since they aren't mountains I can't compare them to the Rockies which means they have a chance!   Anyways, back to the point.  The cabin really was incredible.  Here's the Cave Creek Cabin website and just because they have a great description of it I'm going to take it right from the page ...

"Huge authentic log cabin with modern conveniences. Sleeps 17, 2 full baths. Includes private and secluded 125 acres for hiking and exploring. Property has 3/8 mile of year round creek nestled in an Ozark valley setting for swimming and fishing. Ridge top location with huge covered porch with swing. Enjoy the mountain breezes while listening to the creek below. Build memories that will last a lifetime at Cave Creek Cabin. Adjacent to the Gene Rush Wildlife Management Area and the Carver input on the Buffalo National River (nationally known for it's excellent canoeing and float trips). Our 1840's authentic dogtrot-style log cabin has a massive fireplace and is constructed with hand hewn logs. It was recently moved from Kentucky to this secluded spot and has been restored and modernized for vacation fun and enjoyment of the Ozark mountain country found in Newton County, Arkansas. The cabin is very large and cozy with full walkout basement. Spacious fully equipped kitchen."

After about a week of planning the weekend finally arrived and we were on our way.   We ended up not getting out of town early enough to avoid driving in the dark.   Unfortunately there were some wicked (thankfully paved) switchbacks and some scary back country driving.  I wouldn't normally be scared of back country driving, but considering we were out in the woods driving by some really sketchy trailer/houses that seemed to be occupied it was definitely creepy.  Todd was actually the one to make the comment "Let's not get lost" after we drove by multiple sketchy shacks.  The last 4.3 miles was on dirt roads with many different possible turn offs, but somehow we made it without having to turn around or getting lost.   Once we got there we started exploring the cabin.  This place was huge!!!

The Courtights made it to the cabin about an hour after us.  Once they were unloaded the guys started a fire and cooking dinner - grilled steaks with red potatoes.  Yum.   After dinner because I couldn't keep it a secret any longer (I'm actually very surprised that I was able to keep it), we surprised Todd with an ice cream birthday cake.  Todd made the comment sometime last year that he had always wanted a ice cream cake, so me being the good wife I am actually remembered!    You might have caught on to the fact that I said 'WE' surprised Todd with the cake which is true.  Even though it was Becky's birthday as well, she already knew about the cake.  I had planned it with her and I told her if she didn't like ice cream cakes we could get a second cake, but thankfully she said it sounded like a great idea.

Birthday buddies

Later in the evening after our food was starting to digest we began round 2 of food.  Becky had been telling me about these things they call Mountain pies.  I was a little weirded out by the name, but she described them as using bread to essentially make a crust for many different things.  We made mini pizzas and cherry pies.   You fill these cast iron things with bread and whatever else you want then stick it in the fire and let it cook.   They are awesomely delicious!

Once we woke up Saturday morning we finally got to see the lay of the land.  Turns the cabin was on a ledge that we had no idea was there the night before.   We even had a view of a river/stream/creek that was a surprise too.

After KC showed up we headed down to the river so Dan could do some fly fishing.   As part of a birthday present for Todd I wanted to get him a fishing license so Dan could teach him how to fly fish.  Turns out I think Todd enjoyed it quite a bit which is a good thing because he bought a fly rod that he still hasn't been able to use (its in Germany now).   While they were fishing, we did some exploring.

After a few hours of fishing we went back to the cabin for lunch and then back out again to a different area.   Todd and Dan did more fishing while Becky, KC, and I went on a 2 hour walk.   When the 3 of us made it back to the cars was when the real fun began!!!   KC brought some of his guns - 22 pistol, 22 rifle, 9mm, and an AK-47.   Before this outing I had already shot a 22 pistol and a 9mm.  This was my first time to shot the 22 rifle and AK-47.     Even though I only shot the AK once, it was still alot easier than I was expecting.  Now I understand why the automatic is banned.   Even though I had shot the 9mm on other occassions, this was my least favorite gun, I know the kick isn't bad, but I don't like it.  It scares me way more than the AK.

Todd and Dan far off fishing

After the guns, we did a little off roading with the jeeps to another river area.  Dan did a little more fly fishing while the rest of us did some stone skipping and went on a treasure hunt.   The treasure hunt was very productive - we didn't find any treasure but we did find bamboo growing rampant throughout the area!

I finally got the hang of skipping stones!  Just call me a professional now.
Bamboo in Arkansas???

As you can see had a day of fun on Saturday, only to be topped by more food and drinks.   Our spread included hotdogs, brats, hamburgers, popcorn, mountain pies, popcorn, and an assortment of alcoholic beverages.   We enjoyed some corn hole (aka Bean Bag toss), warmer weather, a hot fire, and nature's beauty.

The weekend concluded with about a 5 hour drive back home.  We ended up doing an extra 2 1/2 hours in the car on back roads checking out fishing spots for Dan with a little more off roading fun.   Its possible that Sunday was Todd's jeep last hooray.  But, what a way to go out!

Back out our place at the end of the weekend

The Ponies

A couple of weeks ago we ventured down to Hot Springs, Arkansas for a day at the horse races.   There is a track there that is open from January to April called Oaklawn.   Let me just say that we all (we went with some friends) had a fabulous time!   I'm not sure about everyone, but I think this was the majority's first time at a horse race.  There were 10 races total, Todd and I bet on every single one of them.  After all what's the point of going to the ponies if you aren't going to bet!   We sometimes lost and sometimes won, I think our biggest cash out was around $23.   It may not sound like a lot, but it sure was exciting to us!   Our bets ranged from picking horses to win (finish 1st), place (finish 1st or 2nd), show (finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd), and the trifecta (finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in exact order).   Some of my favorite horse names of the day included, but not limited to ... Combuckstable, Cast A Cold Eye, Sahm Like It Hot, Jumponthebandwagon,  Posse Cat, Billy Two Hats (which won for us), and Absinthe Minded.   I don't know really very much about horses, but that they get cool names ... at least at the track.

After the track we went to a place that Bill Clinton would always eat at when visiting Hot Springs, apparently he loved their BBQ.  The place is called McClard's.   I'd say President Bill was right about this place, it was delicious with HUGE amounts of food!!

Here's some pictures from our day at the track.  Unfortunately I didn't get any of us as a group, but Becky did, so maybe I can get a couple of her pictures to post later.

Showing off the ponies before the first race.

All Pottered Out

Todd and I just recently decided that we wanted to read the Harry Potter series.   (I think we might have been one of the only few left in the world that hasn't joined the HP craze.)  Although instead of reading it we decided we would do the books on tape.   This was both of our first time to listen to any book on tape.   If you've never done it I would definitely recommend it.  We started the first book on our way to my parents house for Thanksgiving.  The first book is somewhere between 8 or 9 hours along.  I'm not really sure but Todd said he thought the last book was 20 hours long.   That's alot of time to spend listening to a book on tape let alone anything else.  Anyways, I believe it was way worse for me compared to Todd, but I was to the point where all I could think about was hearing more HP.   We liked to use the word "jonesing" mainly just because it was funny to hear someone saying they were jonesing for more Harry Potter.  It took us just shy of 2 months, with alot of time in the car (our Christmas/New Years trip) and multiple days laying in bed or on the couch and listening to it all day long.  I can now say with pride that we have completed the HP book series!!!  I think I'm a little more excited about then Todd although like I said above I think it affected me a bit different than Todd.   I keep telling Todd that I have no idea what I'm going to do now since we are done with HP.

We have been watching the movies as well, but haven't finished them yet.  We watched HP and the Goblet of Fire last night.  We are hoping to be able to see Deathly Hallows Part 1 in the theaters.  Its really all dependent on how long it takes the combination of Netflix and us to watch the movies once we have them.  I'm sure everyone has the thoughts and opinions about the movies and books so now a bit of a tangent .... I would just like to say that I think the movies suck compared to the books.  It makes me wonder if the author was even paying attention to the screen plays once they were written.  What especially makes me mad is Dumbledore.   Once the second guy took over as him (although it might be because I liked the first guy better hands down) I thought he became mean.  Well, maybe not mean, but he wasn't as nice.  I don't think that nice is really the best word either, but I can't figure out a good way to describe him.   In the books he always seemed very understanding and never questioned Harry about anything.  In the movie he seemed like all the others who didn't really believe him.   So that's my 2 cents, of course I could say more, but who really cares ......

There hasn't been much else going on with us lately.   Todd is training for the New Orleans Rock'n'Roll Marathon.    Its a little less than a month away, its Feb. 12th.  So wish him luck!

In closing, we recently went on a hike to Mount Magazine which happens to be the highest place in Arkansas.  There weren't any super awesome views or leaves on the trees, but it was nice to get out.  Here are a couple of pictures to finish off the blog ...
